Why are people afraid of Math?

Hey everyone, welcome back to another post on What are you up to during the Lockdown??

Today’s topic is a little different but something a lot of people would be able to resonate with. We’re talking about a subject that deals with numbers, equations and figures. Yes, you guessed it right, its Math!

Recognize this? It’s the famous quadratic formula. High school math isn’t complete without this.

When we’re first learning this formula, we think: “What’s the point of this? Such a huge formula, it’s not like I’m actually going to need it in real life” and that’s where the fear comes in. What happens is, is that when we think to ourselves and reason with ourselves about how it isn’t “worthy” of being learnt, we aren’t able to perform in tests on that topic, and hence comes the fear. The thing is, most people associate math with formulas, rather than the beautiful logic behind it!

If you asked someone who really loves math, they’ll tell you that the reason they love math is because they can use what they’ve learnt to solve actual problems. You’ll also realise soon that many real life problems do include using math, and hence makes it an important subject and skill to know and master.

Math is more than formulas. Math has a beautiful logic behind everything, and one concept solves multiple questions. But the most beautiful thing about math is, that multiple concepts together, make solutions to problems so simple and elegant! If one understands the crux of the problem, and instead of only focusing on the “final answer” focuses more on the process, you’ll enjoy it so much more, and even if you get the wrong answer, you’ll be motivated enough and excited enough to try it again!

Math is just a subject. Think about why you like your favourite subject. It might be because you’re gifted at it, you enjoy it, you are curious about it or maybe because you think that it’s the most interesting thing to learn. Math can be that too, but we need to be sure not to associate math with just formulas and answers and focus more on the process.

Thank you all for reading and have a great day ahead!

Bye!

    1. Agreed, that does happen, but sometimes all we need is a different perspective and a scary thing is no longer scary!! Thank you so much for reading and sharing your views!
